Under zambian skies

Hello everyone, i hope this post finds everyone well. To those of you back in school im sure you all are unfortunately getting into the swing of things! Our training class here in zambia recently learned that ex peace corps individuals cannot be on the show survivor. The show tends to think that people that have been "surviving" for two years in a third world country are not fit for a show entitled survivor! Our training continues to go smoothly for the nor part. Still lots of language classes and technical class take up most of my day. Its like an accelerated semester in school, except it is hands on learning and it is usually things i have little back ground knowledge in. Last week we dug an environmentally sustainable well for a local village. Earlier this week we learned how to council aids patients. We also learned about mosquito nets and how to promote their use in a village setting. Those are just a few of the sessions we have had over the past two weeks. As for the village life, i am becoming accustomed to it for the most part. I have become friends with the mice that i share a room with. They even think we are good enough friends that they can share my peanut butter. Apparently my idea of friendship was a little bit different. It is very relaxing to take a bath under the stars every night. A great way to settle down for the evening. Not to sound like a hippie, but when i return to the states i would like to carry over the tradition of star-bathing! Also i have my house lit at night by candlelight. Upon attempting to blow out the candles for bed, a candle fell onto my wall and nearly burnt my entire thatch house down. It turned out okay thankfully considering the closest fire department is hundreds of miles away! Thanks again for the thoughts. Hope everyone has a great day!

  1. This is great, its like i got to see two posts in a row! Star-bathing does sound fantastic, I may have to join you when you get back to the states...WELL enough man love for this post i suppose, i may have to bring it up later, not sure yet.

If you have ever seen the movie "wanted" it does say that peanut butter is like a mouse's (i tried to make mice's work...but decided it didnt) favorite food. Don't know if that is accurate, but hey, it seems to be working for you. Name one of them Fievel for me? Haha, you had better get that reference.

Are you tan yet? That seems to be all that i think about anymore, haha so an answer would clear my mind of that...i also wonder if any of the villagers have questioned you about your red hair, but we can save that answer for later, don't wanna give it all away at once. Happy to hear from you again man, take care!

  2. Hello from Mrs. Perry's 2nd grade class! How much peanut butter did the mice eat or did you catch the mice? The 2nd graders think you should train the mice like in the movies. Some students have a pet rat at their home. Please be more careful when blowing out your candles. We wrote you a letter this week. Talk to you soon.

  4. Today a Peace Corps representative came and spoke in one of my Spanish classes. This really isn't anything unusual at all, but it is the first time I have thought about what the guy said for more than 3 seconds after he finished. Not to say I want to or am thinking about actually joining- more of just a "what if" moment. He said that most of the people in my situation end up going to a country in South America to teach English, but he mentioned other programs too including health and well-being and I brought you up in class and told them all about you. I talked you up a lot so they all think I know one pretty cool guy haha. Good luck with everything and take care, we're always thinking about you!
